Urban soil waste composting
After years of experience with garden and terrace composting, with the registration of two patents, to accelerate the formation of compost and to reduce odours, the ESF group is now turning its attention to the composting of urban waste.
With a project financed by Bioman S.p.A. and in collaboration with agronomists from the University of Udine and research groups from the University of Bologna, the objective is to monitor the changes in the properties of compost, derived from urban solid wastes, during its maturation. Furthermore, the mature compost will be used in a field trial to study the effects and potential benefits of this product compared to traditional compost or mineral fertilization.
An in-depth chemical characterization has already highlighted similar properties of the humified organic matter present in mature compost with other composts of different origins. Compost can potentially be used not only as a soil amendment, but also as a biostimulant if applied in small quantities.
What about our experience?
The research and experiments conducted by our group on the topic of composting have already led to notable results, with two patents registered! The first concerns a composition for the suppression of odors from the organic fraction of domestic waste (IT1403027, EP2452697, Nov 2010), the second improves the composting process of these organic wastes (IT1403026, EP2542930, Nov 2010).
